Shortcut To Windermere: There is a shortcut across Lake Windermere, by ferry. To reach the ferry (about 3 miles from Oak Apple Barn) drive past Hawkshead; turn left at the T-junction, follow the road straight to The Ferry. The ferry operates only in good weather, and costs £3 each way for vehicles. It leaves as soon as it is full, so typically the maximum wait is 15 minutes off season, but this can be as much as 90 minutes at the height of the season.
